Bacardi & Soda’s Cool Escape
Bacardi and her joey, Soda, were rescued during a blistering heatwave after being found on the ground and drooling — a clear sign of severe heat stress. This condition can quickly lead to dangerous dehydration, so the duo were rushed into care at SKER.
Our vet team gave both mum and bub a thorough assessment and provided fluids to help them rehydrate. With the worst of the heat still ahead, Bacardi and Soda were kept safe in our purpose-built rehabilitation centre, where they could recover in comfort. For the next few days, they relaxed in our misted enclosures, staying cool and stress-free under the close watch of our veterinary team.
Once they were fully rehydrated and given a clean bill of health, Bacardi and Soda were ready to return home. Since they had only been rescued a couple of kilometres away, they were released back at SKER, right into familiar habitat.
This sweet duo’s story is a reminder of how vulnerable our wildlife can be during extreme weather — and how a little timely intervention can make all the difference.
