Biggsy’s Second Chance
Biggsy was found by the roadside showing signs of being struck by a vehicle. With reports of a serious arm injury, our hearts sank — but we knew we had to act fast.
He was rushed to our dedicated wildlife clinic, where our vet team discovered he had a luxated (dislocated) shoulder. It was an extremely painful injury, but thankfully Dr Lisa was able to reduce the luxation, bringing Biggsy immediate relief. To help the joint heal properly, Dr Erik carefully fashioned a sling to immobilise his arm.
Over the following weeks, Biggsy received intensive treatment and his mobility was slowly, carefully increased. His determination — along with a lot of eucalyptus leaves — saw him make fantastic progress. Once strong enough, he moved into one of our pre-release tree yards, where he could climb, forage, and rebuild his strength.
After his time in care, Biggsy was finally ready for release. He returned to the wild, strong and healthy, with the best chance of living out his life as a free koala once again.
But Biggsy’s story doesn’t stop there. Dr Erik has written up his case as a study and submitted it for publishing in an international veterinary journal, in the hope that this innovative treatment can help save even more koalas in the future.
Biggsy’s journey is not only a testament to his own resilience, but also a shining example of how dedicated care and innovative thinking can make a lasting difference for wildlife.
