A New Clinic Table That’s Making a Big Difference
In early August, something exciting arrived at our wildlife hospital — a brand-new adjustable veterinary clinic table! This incredible piece of equipment was proudly funded through a game-changing grant from Alinta Energy, and it’s already making a huge difference to both our team and the wildlife in our care.
Green Fencing: A First for South Australia’s Southern Expressway
South Australia is about to lead the way in wildlife-friendly infrastructure. As part of the upcoming Majors Road Upgrade, Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue Ltd (SKER) is partnering with Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) to trial our innovative Green Fencing concept along the Southern Expressway. This landmark initiative combines smart infrastructure with native vegetation to reduce wildlife road deaths, enhance biodiversity, and make roads safer for everyone.

A Trio of Triumphs: How Three Grants Transformed SKER
Late 2024 brought a wave of good fortune to Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue (SKER) as we were awarded three invaluable grants. For a small charity like ours, running a wildlife vet clinic without government funding, these grants have been nothing short of transformative. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Awesome Foundation Fleurieu, the Australian Wildlife Society, and Human Kind Studios for their generous support in helping us complete some much-needed projects.
Healthy Koalas DON’T drink!
Based on over 10 years of observation, including the care of more than 30 hand-raised joeys and hundreds of adult koalas, and analysis of public reports of wild koalas, we have concluded that, in our experience, a koala observed drinking is likely not healthy.

MedVet Concepts: A Lifeline for Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue
Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue (SKER) is delighted to acknowledge the invaluable support of MedVet Concepts. Their ongoing partnership has been instrumental in ensuring the smooth operation of our on-site veterinary clinic, enabling us to provide critical care to hundreds of native animals each year.
One of the most significant ways MedVet Concepts has assisted SKER is through their exceptional service for our on-site x-ray machine. Their expertise and prompt response times have been invaluable in ensuring that our veterinary team can accurately diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses in the animals we rescue.

We’re excited to share some fantastic news! SKER has been awarded a generous grant through Foundation SA. This funding will significantly support our ongoing efforts to provide exceptional care for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife in our region. We are incredibly grateful for this amazing support.

Our Director Steve Farrimond contributed an article about SKER and our activities, featured in the Autumn issue of The Journal of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia.
It was an excellent chance to showcase the comprehensive work done at SKER and emphasise that we are more than just a rescue service in South Australia.

This might not seem like much to some but this is only the ones that we know about and when you compare this to 2022’s loss of 7 Koalas for the year this is a disturbing increase.
