Honey Joy

Rescued : 16 /12/2024 Reason: Abandoned Weight: 2.8kg Sex: Female

In the scorching heat of a sweltering summer day, Honey Joy found herself in a perilous situation. Spotted alone and low in a tree, she was a picture of vulnerability. A concerned passerby reached out to our hotline for help.

A dedicated rescuer quickly arrived on the scene and carefully brought Honey Joy down from the tree. She was rushed to our wildlife clinic, where it became apparent she was suffering from severe heat stress. Our experienced veterinarian wasted no time in assessing Honey Joy's condition. To combat the potential damage to her organs caused by the heat stress, they immediately administered IV fluids.

After a few days of intensive care, Honey Joy began to show signs of improvement. She was moved to our koala kindy, where she was introduced to Violet and Crumble.

As time passed, Honey Joy grew up healthy and resilient, and eventually she was old enough to be released back into the wild—ready to begin life anew in her natural habitat.

How I got my name: Sticking with our sweet theme, the “H” in her name stands for Happy Valley, the very place where she was rescued with “Joy” also linking to her rescue location

Favourite eucalypt to eat: River Red Gum (Eucalyptus Camaldulensis)

Mintie

Rescued : 09 /03/2025 Reason: Health Concerns Weight: 3.5kg Sex: Female

Mintie, a young joey found in distress on a hot day by a concerned passerby, was reported to SKER. Following an unsuccessful search for her mother, conducted by SKER volunteer, she was transported to the SKER clinic for veterinary examination.

Mintie received a full vet check and was moved to an outdoor enclosure for monitoring. Young and alone, she was stressed, so the team knew she needed companionship.

To address Mintie's loneliness, she was placed in the "big kids" Koala Kindy, a space designed for older orphaned joeys. She quickly bonded with Violet, Crumble, and Honey Joy. Now, they play and comfort each other, giving Mintie vital support after her trauma. Seeing Mintie thriving with her new friends highlights the koalas' resilience and our team's commitment.

Thanks to this care, Mintie thrived and grew strong, preparing her for life back in the wild. In time, she was released onto a beautiful property, ready to begin her next chapter as a healthy, independent koala.

How I got my name: Sticking with our sweet theme, Mintie was named after Mindari Reserve where she was found.

Peppermint

Rescued : 04/12/2024 Reason: Orphaned Weight: 1.6kg Sex: Female

Working with sick and injured wildlife is a daily balancing act, filled with difficult decisions. Sometimes, the toughest choices involve not just one life, but two.

Peppermint was lucky to have a brave mother who fought to protect her, even while suffering from a severe knee injury. Her knee was irreparably damaged, with bone loss and cartilage deterioration. Anyone who has experienced a knee replacement can empathise with the immense pain her would have been enduring.

While our hearts ached at the thought of ending her suffering, we knew it was the most humane course of action. This left Peppermint orphaned, a heartbreaking reality. However, a glimmer of hope emerged in the form of an almost instant bond that blossomed between Peppermint and Cherry Ripe.

With companionship, care, and time, Peppermint grew stronger and more confident. She eventually reached the milestone every wildlife carer dreams of—release. Today, she is living her best life in the wild, where she belongs, carrying her mother’s bravery and her own resilience into a new chapter of freedom.

How I got my name: Sticking with our sweet theme Peppermint got her name as she was a little spicy to begin with so having pepper in her name seemed fitting.

Favourite eucalypt to eat: Grey Box (Eucalyptus Microcarpa)
