Happy Gilmore’s Comeback

Happy Gilmore was no stranger to SKER — he had been in our care five years ago, and last year he found himself needing our help once again. He was rescued after being found hunched on the ground, looking unwell and unable to climb.

This time, the problem was with his eyes. He had developed severe corneal ulcers in both eyes, leaving him temporarily blind and unable to forage for food. By the time he arrived, he was weak and hungry.

Our vet team began treatment with medicated eye gel, and within a week there was significant improvement. As his vision returned, so too did his appetite — and soon he was happily lounging in his hospital pen, munching on fresh eucalyptus.

With his eyesight restored and an extra 1.3kg gained, Happy Gilmore grew stronger each day. Once he had fully recovered, it was finally time to send this beautiful boy home.

Happy Gilmore was released back into the wild, where he could continue his life as a free koala once more — climbing trees, finding his own food, and doing all the wild koala things he was meant to do.

How I got my name: Stemming from Happy valley with its beautiful nearby golf course this was a fitting name

Favourite eucalypt to eat: River Red Gum (Eucalyptus Camaldulensis)
