Squinty was found wandering on a vacant block when an eagle-eyed passerby noticed something wasn’t quite right with one of their eyes. With the help of a local rescuer, Squinty was safely contained, and one of SKER’s team members transported them to our on-site wildlife veterinary clinic for assessment.

On arrival, our vet team noticed Squinty was squinting with one eye—hence the name. The eye was flushed thoroughly, but due to its tiny size, it was difficult to fully assess. When flushing did not resolve the issue, we sought the expertise of an ophthalmologist (eye specialist). The specialist diagnosed Squinty with end-stage ocular disease, a condition where the eye is slowly dying. This is extremely painful and, unfortunately, the only option to ensure Squinty’s comfort and prompt return to the wild is to remove the eye.

In an incredible act of generosity, the ophthalmologist has offered to perform the surgery at SKER’s clinic on her day off, helping reduce costs for our charity. After surgery, Squinty will remain in care to recover with ongoing vet checks, medication, enrichment, and a specialist echidna diet.

Your sponsorship will directly support Squinty’s recovery—covering veterinary treatment, medication, ongoing care, and the specialised food they need to heal and thrive.
