We are located on a 22 acre property with a dedicated rehabilitation centre with purpose built veterinary clinic, indoor/outdoor enclosures, pre-release yards with a dedicated embarr warning misting system to ensure the safety of all animals in the event of a bushfire

SKER has a fully operational veterinary clinic where we can provide immediate treatment to animals that come into care 24/7, including x-ray, ultrasounds and blood tests all done onsite.

Providing these services onsite improves patient care. By providing immediate treatment and reducing the need for transport, handling and exposure to domestic animals we minimise stress and humanising behaviours.

Providing onsite veterinary care

Purpose built enclosures

We have all our animal enclosures housed onsite instead of in domestic backyards with individual carers. This creates a calmer environment and limits human interaction and reduces stress on the animals. We have indoor hospital pens for critical patients and spacious outdoor enclosures for the majority of their stay.

Wet Koala Louis Vuitton SKER

Keeping animals in care comfortable

We ensure all animals in our care have all their needs met with fresh browse provided daily, custom misting systems to keep them cool on hot days, as well as quiet enclosures to allow them to heal, with enclosures cleaned once a day with trained volunteers to limit stress.

Pre release koala enclosures SKER

Pre - release enclosures

Koalas in our care go through transitions to ensure they are completely healed and fit and ready to go back into the wild. We not only have indoor hospital pens and outside enclosures we also have dedicated pre-release yards with large trees for koalas to build up strength before returning to the wild.

Koala joeys on branch hanging

Koala joeys require various needs as they grow from indoor pens with restricted access for round the clock bottle feeds, to a custom fit out Koala Kindy with smaller branches as they learn to climb and jump between branches. When they are weaned off their bottles and transitioned to solely eucalypt leaf they move to our pre-release enclosure to build up climbing strength and ensure complete dehumanisation before release.

Strict protocols are in place at SKER to reduce human interaction with koala joeys in care.

Koala joey facilities

SKER Echidna Enclosures

Echidna Enclosures

Echidnas require extreme quiet when they are recovering from an injury, as well as a spacious enclosure with no hazards and plenty of mulch to keep cool, so they have a dedicated area away from busy zones of the facility to ensure they have the best odds to recover.

Bush fire protection/preparedness

SKER takes the threat of bushfires seriously and with this have invested in an Embarr fire system. Once a fire is detected, Embarr Argus’s intelligent system automatically activates our sprinkler system in response to the threat, optimising water use and protecting all animals in care as well as the rehabilitation centre should the need arise.

We also have our own Farm Fire unit onsite to be able to extinguish spot fires around the property.

Managing a facility of this quality comes with significant expenses. If you'd like to contribute to the costs of maintaining and improving our facilities, you can donate here.
